Mission + Vision

Welcome to the Passing the Torch blog!

Almost a year ago today, I quit my job. As I was looking for a new job, I took a leap of faith and applied to the Adobe Creative Residency program. My proposal was to create a children’s book called Lightbringer and begin the follow-up graphic novel series. During that time, I planned to invite the creative community to journey with me through the process of bringing the story to life, and hopefully pass the torch of storytelling onto the next generation.

Sadly, I did not receive the residency. I quickly fell into a contract position with an amazing marketing company, and over the course of 2018 I was blessed the opportunity to become their full-time creative director.

However, my pitch for the Residency kept humming in my heart. As 2018 drew to a close, I asked myself, “Why do I have to get the Residency in order to do this?” As I was wrestling with this thought, another log was thrown on the flames; the annual Fine Arts Academy I’ve taught at the last 5 years had chosen their theme.

Shine On.

The writing was on the wall. I needed to move forward and seize the opportunity to create Lightbringer and invite others into the process. I needed to get this story out there to show my students what it looks like to put flesh and bones on an idea and bring it to life.

This blog will chronicle that process. I will be sharing the big picture components of storytelling (as best as I know them), as well as the nitty-gritty details of getting your words and picture printed (more on that in the next post).

So come along for the ride! Grab paper and pencil, stylus and tablet (whatever you need to tell stories) and let’s tell some stories in 2019!

P.S. If you want to apply for the Adobe Creative Residency yourself, the 2019 application is closed, but there’s always 2020!
